VCE VM and Leadership

Leadership is multidimensional and involves learning about yourself, others and the wider community. The Year 11 and 12 VCE VM students are constantly challenged to ensure they are managing the learning environments of Kilbreda College, TAFE and their chosen workplace. Additionally, the students are called upon to show leadership skills in their respective partnerships with St Patrick’s Primary School and Yarrabah School.

Leadership comprises self-awareness and interrelated competences such as:

  • Self-confidence
  • Social awareness
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Problem-solving abilities
  • Goal setting
  • Project planning
  • Teamwork skills
  • Creative and critical thinking
  • Conflict resolution
  • Time management
  • Digital technology skills
  • Reflection and evaluation

In an ever-evolving landscape, developing transferable skills like collaboration, empathy, reasoning and adaptability will allow a person to thrive in various settings. The Year 11 and 12 students are to be commended for their personal growth and willingness to step up when called upon.

Yarrabah Student Reflections

I like seeing the Yarrabah students being happy and involved in our activities. They always arrive with a positive attitude, which inspires me and the other VM students.
Kayla O’Brien
Our joint program of creating mosaics is progressing well and the Yarrabah students always bring happy smiles to Kilbreda.
Evie Barnes
In our last session, we were all up for a boogie and the Yarrabah students impressed us with their great dance moves.
Scarlett Kitts
It is wonderful to bond with the Yarrabah students. We are all a little bit out of our comfort zones, but we feel as if we are getting to know each other better every session.
Sienna Gillon
Our recent session made us so happy to see all the smiles on the Yarrabah students’ faces. It was great to see them become involved. We were able to see a different side of their personalities.

City Tour

The VCE VM students participated in a city tour with the Salvation Army as part of their Enrichment Day program. Students participated in a guided walking tour that commenced at Bourke Street and toured the Parliament House and Treasury Gardens vicinity. As they navigated the city streets, they paused to engage in activities that helped to challenge stereotypes surrounding social hardship and encourage empathy. Students learnt about homelessness in Australia, hearing real stories, on location, that safely prompted their consideration of people in need.

The workshop was designed to challenge preconceptions, increase knowledge, inspire empathy and provide a platform for social justice activation.  Our Year 11 students were immersed and engaged and respectfully asked probing and interesting questions.
