Write a Book in a Day 2024

On Friday 12 July, 60 Kilbreda students from all year levels formed nine teams to participate in the 2024 Write a Book in a Day Competition at the Kilbreda Library. As well as being able to win prizes for writing and illustrating a book, the students have contributed to the Kid’s Cancer Project, both in funds raised and the contribution of their books for children to enjoy while undergoing cancer treatment.

With only the word count and a few compulsory characters and words (the parameters) to guide them, the students set off in their groups to create their fully illustrated, unique stories.

The enthusiasm and creative energy from the students was palpable, especially the ‘burst’ of excitement and anticipation when the students received their parameters; followed by the ‘buzz’ of the teams working hard in such a fun and productive atmosphere.

Thank you to all the wonderful staff that supported the WABIAD Competition, and the enthusiastic students for making this day so valuable and memorable.

Reading Connections Term 3

The emphasis for the Reading Connections classes for Term 3 is ‘You be the Critic’. In brief sessions and literature circle groups, Year 7, 8 & 9 students will critique the cream of Youth literature according to the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), using the 2024 ‘Notable list’.

Looking closely at the latest in quality Australian fiction is a great segue into 2024 Book Week at Kilbreda College from 19 – 23 August. The 2024 theme for Book Week is ‘Reading is Magic’. Stay tuned for more exciting updates of Book Week activities.

More information on Book Week as well as the Notable and Shortlisted books can be found on the CBCA website https://cbca.org.au/cbca-book-week
