Year 8 French
In French classes recently, we have been learning directions using a map of the town of Montauban. Many of the streets there were named after famous people. In groups, we researched them and presented our findings to the class. They included:
- Baron Pierre de Coubertin who founded the Olympics
- Roland Garros, who in 1913 became the first person to fly solo across the Mediterranean Sea; the French Open Stadium is also named after him
- Dominique Ingres was a painter born in Montauban
- Antoine de Saint-Exupery who wrote the famous children’s story “The Little Prince”
- Henri Dunant, co-founder of the Red Cross and won a Nobel Peace Prize
- Claude Debussy, a famous composer
- Louis Braille who invented a system to help blind people read and
- Marie Curie, probably the most famous female scientist, who won two Nobel prizes for physics and chemistry.

Year 9 French Cooking
Cooking La salade niçoise (from the city Nice in southern France) with a group of Year 9 French students was a wonderful blend of language learning and cultural immersion.
The students practised their French vocabulary while preparing this classic Mediterranean dish, known for its rich combination of fresh vegetables, tuna, and eggs.
We also discussed what are the basics of the Mediterranean diet, emphasising its health benefits, such as being rich in healthy fats, vegetables, and lean proteins.
In addition, this diet is not only good for personal health but also environmentally sustainable, highlighting its positive impact on the planet through seasonal, local ingredients.

Year 11 French
We participated in an incursion run by the Faculty of Arts at Melbourne University called “Le Cambriolage: The Heist.” We found the experience both thrilling and educational. The French-themed escape room concept was engaging, as it required us to use our French language skills and to collaborate effectively with classmates to solve puzzles. The immersive nature of the event made learning fun, as we were tasked with recovering a stolen artefact. It challenged us to think critically and communicate in French under time pressure, promoting both language acquisition and teamwork in an exciting and memorable way.
