Visit to the NGV
Students from the senior Italian and French language classes recently enjoyed an enriching visit to the National Gallery of Victoria. They engaged in activities detailed in their respective booklets, which included analysing famous Italian paintings and exploring the nuances of French Impressionist masterpieces.
The Italian class delved into Renaissance and Baroque artworks, such as Tiepolo’s “Cleopatra’s Banquet” and Toscani’s “The Adoration of the Magi.” They learned about the historical context and artistic techniques of these periods, enhancing their understanding of Italian culture and language through art.
Meanwhile, the French class followed a tour guide explaining the impact that 18th-century French Impressionist works had on modern art. This hands-on experience not only broadened their cultural horizons but also provided a practical application of their language skills.
In the afternoon we walked to the LUME in Docklands to attend the Leonardo da Vinci experience. This immersive exhibition brought to life the genius of Leonardo through a blend of art, science, and technology.
Students engaged with interactive displays and multimedia installations, exploring da Vinci’s masterpieces and inventions. The experience included detailed analyses of iconic works such as “The Last Supper” and “Mona Lisa,” along with insights into Leonardo’s innovative engineering designs.
Overall, the visit was a memorable blend of education and inspiration, showcasing the profound connection between language and art.
Year 10 French : Impressionist painting session
As part of their French language learning course, students participated in an Impressionist painting day. They explored the techniques of renowned artists like Monet and Renoir and learned firsthand what it meant to work “en plein air” and how capturing “the impression” of a landscape is as valuable as painting something in all its details. This hands-on experience not only honed their artistic skills but also deepened their appreciation for French culture. The workshop was a perfect blend of creativity and language learning, making the study of French both fun and engaging.
Japanese
Year 10 and 11 Japanese excursion
Last Friday the Year 10 and 11 Japanese classes went on an excursion to the city to experience some Japanese culture. We went to the NGV to see their Japanese exhibitions, Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen restaurant, Daiso and Melbourne Central!
At the NGV we had the chance to explore all that it had to offer. All of the art and exhibitions were amazing, specifically, the Japanese. There was so much beautiful old art and sets. It was especially amazing to see the old appliances that they would use throughout the traditional eras of Japan; like teapots and folding screens (Byōbu).
We all ordered different food at Ikkoryu, and it was all delicious! Especially the karagedon (which is Japanese fried chicken on rice) and the pork chashudon (braised pork belly with sauce on rice).
After our lunch, we went to Daiso, a cheap Japanese department store franchise. You can buy almost anything at Daiso. I bought Japanese curry roux (the usual that I get from Daiso; it’s really good), a new pencil and a kanji workbook.
Then we went to Melbourne Central, which was designed by a Japanese architect. I went to Harajuku Crepes, where I got a custard cream crepe; it was amazing and so tasty!!! We also got boba and went to a few cute Japanese shops.
Overall it was an amazing experience and fun excursion! We all enjoyed it, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Ms Yamanaka and Mr Sakurai! Thank you so much for your hard work as our teachers and for setting up this excursion for us! ありがとうございます!

Year 8 Japanese
On Wednesday 5 June, the Year 8 Japanese students and Compass students had a great time participating in a Japanese workshop where we were taught how to draw in the manga art style by Kenny Sensei. He taught us about different ways to draw figures and ways to make them show different expressions and personality traits. We also ate some delicious mochi ice cream which we were all looking forward to trying, and had Year 12 Japanese students come in and tell us all the details and benefits of continuing to learn Japanese.
We all had an amazing time doing these activities together and felt really immersed in Japanese culture!
Kenny Sensei was an incredible teacher and we’re very grateful for him teaching us so much about manga. Thanks to him, Yamanaka Sensei, and Sakurai Sensei for a really fun and interesting day!
Kara Gurung, Year 8
Our school hosted a remarkable event that celebrated Japanese culture through engaging in a Manga Workshop where Kenny Chan, an artist, taught us the basics and the history behind manga. We listened to an insightful presentation by Year 12 VCE students, Jasmine, Emily, Hannah and Lola. They talked about their casual interest which blossomed into an appreciation for Japanese culture and literature. Each student shared their personal experiences about learning the language. To end the experience, we were given a popular treat in Japan, Yukimi mochi ice cream with a vanilla filling, which was absolutely delicious. Overall, it was inspiring, exciting, and incredibly fun!
