VET Sport and Recreation
Over the last few weeks, the two Unit 1 & 2 VET Sport and Recreation classes have been participating in multiple sport related activities. These included two F45 sessions, a ‘Recover Right’ session run by St Kilda Football Club and participating in running the Mentone Primary School Athletics Day and the Mordialloc District Primary Athletics Carnival. The two F45 sessions that we completed were based on strength and conditioning-based training and an intense cardio workout. Thank you to our personal trainers, Matt and Fraser, who pushed us to our limits and taught us the correct forms of each exercise. The Recovery Right session was run by Hannah Priest, the Captain of the AFLW Saints team and Trish, who plays for the Saints VFLW team. They took us through the theory behind the rights and wrongs of recovery after a game or workout. After we completed the theory with Hannah, Trish took us to use their ice baths and compression boots. This was a fun and enjoyable experience which helped us recover correctly. We also attended the Mentone Primary Athletics Day and the Mordialloc District Primary Athletics Carnival, where we assisted the teachers by recording all of the results of the students and assisted in helping at each event. We had heaps of fun participating and completing all of these events and put into practice valuable skills that we have learned in our course.

Parent Reminders
Hats: Please ask your child to dig out those lovely white caps as we head into Term 4. Our SunSmart policy applies and we will be expecting students to wear hats outdoors again as part of their PE uniform.
Non participation notes: If your child has a reason to not be participating (medical etc.) we would appreciate it if you could write their PE teacher a note or send them an email. This ensures that staff, parents and students are all on the same page and assessments are not affected. Let’s keep up the good communication.
Year 8 Cheerleading Program
Our Year 8 students have been participating in a series of cheerleading incursions provided by Proactivity. This activity promotes teamwork and cooperation among students, which is important in creating a positive school culture. The students are taught different techniques such as stunts, tumbling, jumps and dance routines. These sessions help improve their strength, flexibility, coordination and cardiovascular fitness. Additionally, they learn how to work as a team and coordinate their movements. Overall, cheerleading is proving to be an enjoyable and thrilling activity that brings happiness to all participants.
Year 9 Self-Defence Sessions
Year 9 students are learning some valuable life skills in the self-defence program they are undertaking, also provided by Proactivity. Not only does self-defence allow children to tangibly defend themselves against physical attacks, it also sparks various benefits to them in everyday life. The program covers various self-defence techniques including blocking, striking and controlling techniques, tips/ideas (for example – what to do when you’re at an ATM, don’t put your purse underneath your arm etc.) and awareness scenarios (e.g. safety at a party and knowing your surroundings).
What’s coming up next term?
The Year 11 Physical Education students will be attending the St. Kilda Football Club in the third week of Term 4 to participate in an Elite Energy session. Students will be guided through a typical week of a professional footballer to see what is required to reach their peak. Students will be given a snapshot of all aspects of the elite program including the physical demands of AFL/AFLW, the importance of recovery, sleep and nutrition, the mental aspects of the game, goalsetting and using the resources available to be the best version of yourself.
During PE the Year 10’s will be focussing on fitness, in a group of Fitness Training incursions.
Year 9s will attend a “Relationships” seminar by the people at Elephant Education. It will cover the discussion of the moral and ethical dilemmas that come with sexual relationships, peer pressure around sexual activity and relationships, scenarios applying consent plus the unpacking stages of sexual activity (before, during and after).
Meanwhile, Year 8 students will be learning some important water safety skills during their lifesaving sessions late in Term 4 with the Mentone Lifesaving club.
