From the Acting Principal
On Wednesday, 7 August, the Kilbreda College community came together to celebrate a remarkable milestone—our 120th anniversary. The day commenced with a beautiful Eucharistic celebration at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where students, staff, parents and special guests came together to honour our rich history and the enduring values that have guided us for over a century. This was followed by a joyous high tea at the College, where the spirit of Kilbreda shone brightly through the stories shared, the connections rekindled, and the sense of belonging that permeated every moment.
From the stirring rendition of our school hymn to St. Brigid to the sight of our students proudly adorned with white ribbons, every moment was filled with the spirit and pride that define Kilbreda College. This celebration was not only a tribute to our past but also a reflection of the shared commitment among students, staff, parents and past pupils to carry forward the legacy that has guided our school for 120 years.
One of the most memorable highlights of our 120th anniversary celebration was the sight of our students streaming into both the College and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, perfectly dressed in their winter uniforms with the words “Fortitier Et Suaviter”—strength and kindliness—emblazoned proudly on their blazers. This powerful display of unity and pride set the tone for the day’s events. The carefully planned liturgy, prepared with great care by Carole Downie, provided a meaningful and reflective celebration that resonated with all present. The music, under the exceptional coordination and leadership of Kara-Lee Rabbetts, was another highlight, with the Kilbreda Chorale and musicians, led by our talented cantor, Yzabel Mariano, enriching the worship experience with their beautiful and moving performances. Special thanks also go to Amanda Hargreaves for her wonderful performance of Ave Verum Corpus, our readers, candle bearers, community ambassadors and Year 12 student leadership team whose contributions helped create a truly unforgettable celebration.
In celebrating this remarkable milestone, it was important to recognise and express our deep gratitude to the many individuals and groups who have been instrumental in shaping the story of Kilbreda College. During the Mass, I reflected on how God’s work is carried out through human hands, and how the collective efforts of our community have woven a golden thread through the fabric of our history. The following words, shared during the celebration, encapsulate this spirit of appreciation and the enduring legacy that continues to guide us:
As we reflect on this momentous occasion, we recognise that God works through human vessels, and our gratitude extends to many:
- To the Brigidine Sisters: For over 200 years you have committed yourselves to the Brigidine way and given your energies and skills to its faith-filled mission. We thank those of you who have carried this mission to Kilbreda College, shaping our community with your unwavering commitment and spirit.
- To our Principals: Your visionary leadership and steadfast dedication have been instrumental in Kilbreda College’s success and growth. Your commitment to excellence and innovation have inspired generations of students and educators, creating stories that changed lives.
- To our Parents: Your trust and resolute support, especially during the years before government grants, has been indispensable. Together, we have built a truly great school, and your partnership has been integral to our success.
- To our Remarkable Students: You are the heart of our mission. Your energy and enthusiasm, optimism and idealism, good will and openness, energises our teachers and enliven our school community.
- To our Past Pupils: Your support, generosity and continuing encouragement have been vital in nurturing this enduring mission.
- To our Dedicated Teachers and Support Staff: Both past and present, your passion and commitment have shaped and nurtured the minds and hearts of generations of Kilbreda students. Your tireless efforts and innovative approaches have created a vibrant and enriching learning environment for all.
- To Kildare Ministries: We extend our heartfelt gratitude for your leadership and governance over the past 10 years. Your encouragement to “cross new seas” with the spirit of “Encounter, Dream, Do” has empowered us to embrace new opportunities and continue our mission with renewed energy and purpose.
As we celebrate today, let us remember that we are one community made up of many parts. It is the diversity of gifts that each of you have generously shared, the golden thread that you have woven into our story – that enriches and unites us. Together these contributions create a vibrant tapestry of strength and kindliness.
120 years ago, our five founding Brigidine Sisters stood at the gates of 118 Mentone Parade and welcomed their first three students. Despite the long road ahead of them and the challenges they faced, these visionary women possessed the strength to break down barriers and to find a new way. They harboured a profound dream: to build a better world.
Since then, every student who has walked through our school gates has been inspired to embrace that same dream – to cast aside doubts and fears and to be who they were born to be. Whilst times have changed, the same spirit ignited by our founders remains. We called to continue their legacy of building a better world. This is our time!
With the courage of all those who dare to dream beside us, I believe that we can change the world! Together, let us “Bring forth the Kingdom of Mercy; bring forth the Kingdom of Peace; Bring forth the Kingdom of Justice; and Bring forth the City of God.”
As we reflect on our 120th anniversary celebration, we are reminded of the incredible strength and unity that have always defined Kilbreda College. This day was far more than a commemoration; it was a powerful reaffirmation of our shared values and our collective commitment to the mission that has guided us for over a century. The spirit of our founders lives on in each of us, inspiring us to continue building a better world with courage, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to excellence. Now is our time to dream boldly. As we move forward, let us carry the lessons and legacy of this special day. Together, we look forward to the next chapter in Kilbreda’s history, confident that the golden thread of our shared commitment will continue to weave a vibrant tapestry of faith, learning, and community.
