Newly commissioned FIRE Carriers

On Wednesday 7 March, 11 Year 9 students were commissioned into the FIRE Carriers Indigenous Education program. These students underwent a long sign-up process and each of these provided strong evidence of the character of the students who applied. The 11 girls who were selected and commissioned were chosen for their strong work ethic and socially just ethos.

These newly-commissioned FIRE Carriers have each already begun working hard in the program, by writing school bulletin prayers for special dates within the calendar that are of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. These dates include National Sorry Day, NAIDOC Week and the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

Later in the year, the FIRE Carriers’ major projects will include helping organise and run Kilbreda’s Interschool Indigenous Issues Forum, creating an Indigenous-themed mural with the help of a local Bunurong artist and organising and running a fundraising concert for the Opening the Doors Foundation, which supports Indigenous students to achieve success in their education.
