Design and Technologies – Food

The College kitchen has been a buzzing hive of activity over the last few weeks, brimming with an assortment of exciting culinary endeavours. From the delicious aromas wafting through the air to the harmonious symphony of clinking pots and sizzling pans, every corner of the kitchen has been infused with an electric energy!

Year 12

The Year 12 students have embarked on a quest to explore the realm of healthy eating, venturing into the realm of ‘healthy bowls’, a current food trend that celebrates the nutrient-packed goodness of various ingredients. With an artistic eye and a desire for nutritional excellence, they have meticulously designed bowls bursting with colourful vegetables, grains and protein sources. Each creation is a work of art, both visually stunning and enticing to the taste buds, demonstrating their keen understanding of balance, flavour and nutrition.

Year 11

The Year 11 classes have been honing their skills and expanding their culinary repertoire by delving into the realm of savoury delights. With their nimble fingers and determined spirits, they have mastered the art of crafting mouth-watering meat pies. Their creations, encased in golden, flaky pastry, have become a true testament to their dedication and passion for the culinary arts.

On 24 May, the Year 11 Food Studies students united in their quest to explore and experience the rich flavours of Greek cuisine, embarking on a journey to Eaton Mall in Oakleigh. As they entered the vibrant hub of Hellenic culture, a wave of excitement swept over them. The tantalising aromas of garlic, lemon and oregano filled the air, enticing their taste buds and awakening their senses to the wonders of Greek gastronomy. Amidst the lively atmosphere, one student exclaimed, “This is a fantastic opportunity to immerse ourselves in Greek culture and understand the migration influences that have shaped this incredible cuisine.”

As they devoured traditional Greek dishes like souvlaki, saganaki, fava dip and dolmades, another student exclaimed, “The flavours are so fresh and delicious, it feels like a taste of Greece right here in Melbourne. I cannot wait to go to Greece!”

With each bite, the students revelled in the delightful blend of herbs, spices and love poured into each dish, leaving them with a deeper appreciation for the cultural tapestry that weaves through Australia’s culinary landscape.

Year 10

The talented Year 10 students embarked on a sweet adventure, exploring the magic that unfolds when chocolate and zucchini unite in perfect harmony. Their chocolate zucchini cakes, adorned with velvety ganache and tender shreds of zucchini, have astonished the taste buds of both students and teachers alike. Additionally, they have delved into the world of Asian cuisine, skillfully perfecting the delicate balance of flavours in their fried rice dishes.

Year 9

The 9 Café Culture classes embarked on an exciting project, immersing themselves in the world of food trucks. Armed with research and creativity, they delved into designing their very own 3D food trucks, incorporating unique themes and innovative menu ideas. With aprons on and ovens at the ready, they translated their designs into reality, crafting delectable treats that captured the essence of their envisioned ‘trucking’ adventures.

Year 8

The energetic Year 8 students have been no strangers to culinary triumphs either, as they have embraced the art of baking with gusto. Filling bowls with flour, sugar and chocolate chips, they have whipped up batches of delectable chocolate chip cookies that melt in the mouth, leaving a trail of sheer bliss. Not stopping there, they have also delved into the realm of hearty classics by crafting juicy hamburgers that boast a medley of flavours.

In the College kitchen, a symphony of skills and creativity has blossomed. From the savoury indulgence of meat pies to the divine decadence of chocolate zucchini cake, from the warm comfort of chocolate chip cookies to the explosion of flavours in hamburgers, and finally, the wholesome allure of healthy bowls, the students have embraced the diverse culinary world with fervor.

With each recipe mastered and every skill acquired, the kitchen has become a place for passion, education, and fostering a love for cooking that will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Creative Arts – Media

Year 10

This semester, the Year 10 Media class began by discussing the core elements of media and explored concepts such as genre, sound and media literacy. We worked to recut trailers and flip well known and beloved movie genres through the use of sound. We continued by investigating the medium of advertising, with students working in groups to create an advertising pitch inclusive of a print and video advertisement. Groups tapped into their creative side using jingles, chat shows, endorsements and infomercials to sell their products and brands.

We finalised our semester’s work with a brief delve into media analysis focusing on the details of mise-en-scene and how this creates meaning for an audience. Students worked hard, shared opinions and produced fantastic media art pieces.

Year 11

Throughout the semester, Unit 1 Media have been learning about, experimenting with and creating photography, magazines and podcasts.

In photography, we completed several experiments, such as forced perspective with LEGO, mico-focus with water droplets and created our own photographic sequence. We experimented with mise-en-scene, transforming spaces around the school into different settings/locations through the use of props.

In small groups, the class also created magazines and supplementary podcasts about a topic of choice.

By learning about media theory and using different equipment and technologies, we hope students better understand what is behind the types of media in which they see, read and hear.

NGV and Street Art Tour Excursion

Recently, Year 10 Art Students experienced a full day in the city looking and analysing artworks in both the National Gallery of Victoria and the Street Art of Melbourne. The students visited Top Arts and Melbourne Now exhibitions. We had an education officer talk and discuss the purpose and meaning of the artworks. It was great to see the many contemporary Australian Artworks on show.
