Science
With the 2024 school year drawing to a close, there is still plenty happening in Science at Kilbreda.
Year 7 Wild Action Zoo Incursion
On Tuesday 19 November, Wild Action ran a zoo incursion for all Year 7 Science classes. Students had the opportunity to touch or hold the animals that were brought to the classroom and bring their knowledge of classification to life. From a kangaroo joey to a freshwater crocodile, students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing these animals up close and personal.
National Youth Science Forum Year 12 Program
The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Year 12 Program is designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in STEM and to encourage continued studies in these fields. Participants stay at university colleges and are immersed in science and technology, and have the opportunity to participate in tours of science and technology facilities, learn about cutting-edge research, engage with industry partners and research providers, learn about university, training and STEM career pathways and mix with other like-minded students from all over Australia.
We are proud to announce that Sarah Forsyth has been accepted into the program and will be attending the summer session in Brisbane in January. Entry into this program is highly competitive and we congratulate Sarah on her impressive application. We look forward to hearing all about her amazing experience next year.
Applications for the 2025 summer program will be open next June for Year 11 students, via https://www.nysf.edu.au/programs/year-12-program/
Science Talent Search 2024 Winners
This year we had eight entries in the Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria’s Science Talent Search. Our students displayed creativity and ingenuity to produce outstanding pieces of work, including inventing their own games and handmaking game cards, writing a creative story and illustrating the accompanying pictures, creating an animated video from scratch, and taking a series of photos to illustrate a scientific phenomenon. This competition is highly competitive, with over 2,000 entries from across Victoria being judged.
The following students should be commended for the time and effort they put into their projects:
Keira Blackmore
Mia Dobrohotoff and Hannah Lau
Isha Gurung
Kara Gurung
Celeste Healy
Kayleigh Loo and Namie Padasas
Scarlett Presnell
Rhiannan Marie-Jeanne
A special congratulations to Isha, Kara and Rhiannan who were awarded minor bursary awards. Their projects can be viewed below.
VCE exams
We are incredibly proud of the time and effort our Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology students have put in to preparing for their final exams. Many students attended revision lectures and continued to spend hours on-site after formal classes had finished. I would like to express a deep appreciation to Sarah Avitabile, Kylie Carroll, Christopher Moore, Jacinta Devlin, Sue Dempster and Isabelle Renner for the support, guidance and patience they showed students throughout this year, often responding to emails and helping students outside of school hours. We wish everyone well as they wait in anticipation of their results.
