Performance and Development

On Friday 22 November staff members from Kilbreda College attended ‘Formative Assessment – Transforming today and tomorrow’ with Dylan Wiliam. This event was hosted by St Bede’s College.

“Feedback functions formatively only if the information fed back to the learner is used by the learner in improving performance.”

– Dylan Wiliam

It was a privilege to hear Dylan Wiliam speak. Wiliam is an Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment at the UCL Institute of Education at the University College London. His research focus over many years has been the professional development of teachers and the implementation of formative assessment to enhance student learning and outcomes. We, along with other Catholic schools, attended the forum to discuss the importance of formative assessment, explore practical activities and techniques that can be implemented in the classroom and discuss the latest research, strengths and challenges with the use of AI.

All who attended thoroughly enjoyed Wiliam’s presentation and left with many strategies to implement this week in their classroom! The discussion of AI functions and modes of learning challenged our understandings and perspectives on enhancing student learning and outcomes. All attendees left with a greater depth of understanding of feedback, student agency, and how to move the learning forward for all students. A brilliant day for all!

“The whole purpose of feedback should be to increase the extent to which students are owners of their own learning.”

– Dylan Wiliam, Embedded Formative Assessment
