Year 9
After much anticipation the night finally arrived – the Year 9 Social with students from St Bede’s College. Whilst the planning for this night started back in February to ensure a date could be locked in with both schools, the excitement for the students grew as each term passed.
From:
“Ms Cowan, is the social going to happen this year?”
“Is there going to be a social this year?”
“Ms Cowan, when is the social? I hope we get to have one.”
To:
“Is it true, Ms Cowan, that there is a social?”
“OMG Ms Cowan, is the social with St Bede’s? Do we have to invite a boy?”
It was a delight to watch the excitement, the joy, the fear and the realisation that this was really happening pass across their faces as word got around about this event. What a night it was! The hope was that the students would gather together and enjoy each other’s company. The boys were an added bonus.
The bush dance was a huge success. The Kilbreda students certainly had the upper hand, having experienced Bushwahzee at their camp earlier in the year. The Kilbreda students’ prior experience with Bushwahzee clearly paid off, as their enthusiasm and ability to engage with others set a great tone for the night. Bushwahzee have an innate ability to get everyone involved, laugh with and at each other and realise it is all a lot of fun. The energy levels were high, the laughter possibly higher and the smiles on the faces told a thousand stories.
DJ Lauren was a sensation. The playlist decided by the Kilbreda students was a mix of oldies and goodies, along with more recent songs. The students danced like no one was watching, sang like they have never sung before and enjoyed themselves immensely.
As the night drew to a close, the students said farewell to new friends and to old. They took with them their memories of a night that was theirs to enjoy, to be teenagers and to dance like there was no tomorrow. The night may be over, but the memories live on forever.
I wish every student, and their families, a safe and happy holiday. As the weather improves and the days are getting longer, may you all find time for yourselves, for your families and for your friends. I look forward to seeing you after the holidays for your final term of Year 9.
